It is quite common place during site migrations to employ 301 redirects to home page. This is usually done with the belief that redirecting will help the home page to rank for the removed pages.

Now, Google’s John Mueller made it clear that 301 redirects are considered only as soft 404s. In short, these redirects will be ignored by Google. You can check out the video below.
